In the second episode of the current series, we started looking at some of the silent crises of life, beginning with the fact that most people are not truly fulfilled. In the ensuing episodes, we are examining five striking examples and case studies:
- Job dissatisfaction is widespread
- What people regret most in life is shockingly simple and avoidable
- High suicide rates and the calibre of people involved; shocking!
- Most people are working to become poor or poorer
- Most organisations fail
In this episode, we will dive into the fact that what people regret most in life is shockingly simple and avoidable.
Imagine reaching the end of your life, with nothing left to do but look back. What would you wish you had done differently?
In a remarkable sociological study, 50 people — each over 95 years old — were asked: “If you could live your life over again, what would you do differently?”
Because it was an open-ended question, their answers were varied. Yet three powerful themes kept coming up:
- If I had to do it over again, I would reflect more.
- If I had to do it over again, I would risk more.
- If I had to do it over again, I would do things that would live on after I am dead.
Ponder these for a moment.
Are you reflecting enough on your life? Are you daring enough in your choices? Are you building anything that will outlive you?
Interestingly, similar truths echoed from a completely different setting — the deathbeds of ordinary people.
Bronnie Ware, a palliative care nurse, spent eight years caring for the aged and the dying during their last few weeks of life. She asked them about their regrets and dreams. Despite different lives and different stories, the same haunting theme kept surfacing.
Their number one regret?
“I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”
Most people die full of dreams unlived, words unspoken, and courage never summoned — simply because they lived to meet the expectations of others, not the calling of their own soul.
But you can choose differently — starting now.
Live true. Make it count.
