To create the life we want, we need to be intentional with our choices
Beverly Egyir, PhD

Hi! Welcome to my world!

I am Beverly Egyir; a Senior Research Fellow at the Bacteriology Department of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical ResearchUniversity of Ghana. I obtained my PhD in Molecular Bacteriology and Infection from University of Copenhagen, Denmark, with funding from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), through the Antibiotic Drug Use Monitoring and Evaluation of Resistance (ADMER) Project and did a Postdoctoral training at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom with support from ALBORADA TRUST under the Cambridge Africa Partnership for Research Excellence (CAPREx) project.

As a Research Scientist

My research focuses on the use of phenotypic and molecular tools, such as whole genome sequencing for surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria species from humans, livestock and the environment. I have special interest in superbugs like methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria (among others) with an overall goal of tackling AMR through research, surveillance and capacity building on the African continent.

On part-time basis, I teach post graduate courses in Bacterial Infections, Epidemiology of Microorganisms, and Microbial Drug resistance at the Departments of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology and Medical Microbiology, University of Ghana. With funding from the Fleming fund, World Health Organization, Center for Disease Control/Centre for Health System Strengthening, Japan International Cooperation Agency, African Society for Laboratory Medicine, I have facilitated several training sessions on correct identification of bacteria species, performance of standard antimicrobial susceptibility testing and next generation sequencing of same; for laboratory personnel/students in Ghana and the West African region.

Between 2018 – 2020, I served as the Technical Lead for training on the first Fleming country grant award for the nationwide surveillance on antimicrobial resistance in humans and animals in Ghana. Currently, a member of the SEQAFRICA consortium (led by the Technical University of Denmark) developing and supporting whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics capacity for AMR surveillance across Africa, and a member of the Wellcome Trust SEDRIC Genomics for AMR surveillance Working Group. Member, Africa CDC-Pathogen Genomic Initiative focus group on Genomic AMR Surveillance. I am a mentor on the African Society for Laboratory Medicine-led consortium executing the Fleming Fellowship scheme for capacity building in Tanzania, East Africa; co-founder of StaphnetAfrica, a network of African researchers and international collaborators working on Staphylococcus aureus, and a member of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Group in Ghana.

Below are videos of some AMR awareness campaign / education conducted…

As a Life Coach

I have been a teacher in the Children’s Ministry of the Presby Church (and later Methodist Church) since my teenage years.

I am co-founder of Seers Foundation: an NGO committed to helping people to rediscover themselves, and bring out their true or hidden potential and that of their people and get them to become… exceptionally brilliant, exceptionally creative or innovative, exceptionally productive or wealthy, exceptionally healthy, exceptionally free or happy, and so much more! Zing4Life! plays a very significant role.

Also, I am the founder of Women in Biomedicine, Africa; committed to grooming young female scientists along viable career paths.

I am married, and a mother of two teenage girls. I believe in hard work and persistence. And I love to sing, and travel (among others).

Most people ‘wish for’ a wonderful future for themselves and their people, and are committed to taking action towards that, except that unknown to them, they mostly use the common (and largely mediocre and thus ineffective) approach, and therefore struggle unnecessarily without achieving their actually desired goals; if at all, not within a reasonable time. Indeed, most people are not truly fulfilled in life! And also, most people do not know about their true potential, thus they make little or no effort to unearth (or harness) that true (or hidden) potential; they waste their true (or hidden) potential and consequently suffer needlessly! How may I be of help?
