Step 3: Delegate as much as possible.
Other people can do most of the things on your Priority ‘To-do’ list as equally well as you, or even better than you, and often, at a cheaper or optimum cost. As long as it is legal, and such ones are available, you have to delegate to them, giving them as much information as possible and permissible.
Seer, the essence of delegation is to get others to do the bulk of the work, to free you to concentrate on the strategic thinking and overall coordination for efficient execution. The rule of thumb in delegation is, ‘Never do anything that you can get someone else to do for free or cheaper; however never delegate a task that requires your most unique skill, and always accept complete responsibility for all the tasks you delegate, and every outcome.’ There is something in particular that only you can do to make a significant difference in your business, organisation or your personal life; if you don’t do it, no one else would, and that would imply you’re being irresponsible; Seer, don’t delegate that.
Avoid doing everything by yourself; leverage team support. We discuss how to get the most out of people without creating resentment in The True Leader course, and the book. Of course, your team members must be applying time management principles too, to be efficient and effective.
Step 4: Select the appropriate time-management systems.
There are so many time-management systems available; from simple manual ones to very complicated electronic ones. A few…
– Time/Project Management Software
– Timetable
– Gantt Chart
– Desktop Organiser
– Diary
– Mobile Phone
– PDA
– Alarm Clock
Each has its merits and demerits, so you need to use an appropriate combination of as many of these systems as may be essential, depending on your peculiar circumstances. Personally I prefer systems that are cloud-based and accessible on all my devices, synced. With that I can comfortably view and work on my large screens in the office, on my laptop when at home, and on my phone when on the move. In the fuller edition of this course, and in my book Timescape, I elaborate on various recommended apps, and more. Spoiler alert: one of my favourites is the Evernote app.
